 USAGE NOTE:  Clocks are found in vanitas paintings as symbols of the transcience of life. Stopped clocks represent dealth and are placed on graves in South American countries to mark the point between life and death.

In Chinese culture, giving a clock to one's parent as a birthday gift is a show of disrespect. This act is taken to mean that you are marking time on their earthly presence.
